As a class, we spend a lot of time at the beginning of the year talking about what is expected in our classroom. We walk through possible classroom scenarios and try to think of logical consequences to our actions. This enables the students to begin thinking about how their choices / actions affect others around them. At this point, we begin talking about our rights as members of the classroom community and eventually, the students begin to understand that rules need to exist for these rights to be respected. There are always lots of ideas presented by the students, most of which can fall under three main headings:
1. We care for ourselves,
• always do our best;
• walk inside the school;
• listen attentively so we know what is happening, etc.
2. We care for others,
• keep our hands to ourselves;
• work quietly so as not to be disruptive,
• listen while others are talking; etc.
3. We care for our things,
• keep things tidy;
• take care of classroom and school materials; etc.
