Please take the time to develop a way to make your child's snack distinctly different from his/her lunch to avoid confusion (e.g. label lunch as #1 and snack as #2) - whatever works for you and your child. Also, please ensure that your childs' name is on all lunch and snack containers.
Please support our class efforts to take care of the earth by sending in litter-free lunches. You can get ideas for litter-free lunches by visiting http://par.hdsb.ca and clicking on Parent Info.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Required items:
A bag of extra clothes (just in case!)
A pair of running shoes (for indoor use ONLY)

Not Required (but very much appreciated!)
A box of tissue
A box of plastic spoons (just in case students forget to bring a spoon for their lunch)
A box of Ziploc type baggies (any size)
A water bottle (learning can make you thirsty!)
Tennis balls (for bottoms of chairs - helps reduce the noise in the classroom)

All stationary supplies are provided. However, if desired, students may bring in 1 pencil case with pencils, pencil crayons, and/or crayons.

NO MARKERS and PLEASE LABEL EVERYTHING!

NO PEANUTS PLEASE

Please do not send products with peanuts to school.  We have students at Park School who are allergic to peanuts and, for their safety, we do not allow peanut products at the school.

LINK PAGE

Your child's Link Book will be sent home each night in a Ziploc bag. The Link Book is for all communication between home and school. Any notes can go into the Ziploc bag, and any questions/ comments may be written right in the Link Book.

It is each child's responsibility to make sure that his/her Link Book is signed at home and school every and put back in his/her backpack.

HOMEWORK

Homework books will be coming home during the first week of school. Please keep this book at home and use it to complete weekly Homework assignments, which can be found in the Link Book. There will be a note in the Link Book as to when the Homework books are to be returned for checking (usually the last Friday of the month). In grade 1, no more than 10 minutes a night should be spent on homework.

COMMUNICATION

The easiest way to communicate between home and school is through the Link Book.  However you do have the option of e-mailing me at bettencourtr@hdsb.ca, or calling the school at (905) 877-9301 and leaving a message with Mrs. Bussmann.

PERSONAL BELONGINGS

It is not uncommon for items from home (toys, games, etc.) to get lost or damaged while at school. For this reason, it is recommended that all personal items remain at home. Should your child decide to bring in items from home (ie. to play during recess time), they do so at their own risk. Park School cannot be held responsible for any personal items that end up lost or damaged while at school.

DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP

There are no teachers on duty until 9:00 a.m. Please do not drop children off at school before this time.

Students will enter the school with their class after the bell rings at 9:15 a.m. On rainy days, children may wait in the hall outside our classroom. You may pick up your child at 3:45 p.m. at the front door by the JK playground.

Because it is very busy in the hallways during arrival and dismissal times, please do not come into the school to drop off or pick up your child. Students should be dropped off or picked up in designated areas only.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

Every child's birthday is special. In our class, we'll have a monthly birthday celebration for all students whose birthday falls in that month.

Students who are celebrating their birthday that month will be asked to bring in one ingredient and will spend part of the morning baking a birthday treat to share with all of their classmates.  If parents have a police check on file they are welcome to come and help with the baking.  Please let us know if you would like to help out.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS

Please look for Scholastic Book Club order forms in your child's Link Bag each month.  If you wish to place an order, please return it with payment (make cheques payable to Scholastic Canada) by the due date, which will typically be a week later.  There are some really great deals and it is a perfect way to stock up on great affordable gifts for the children in your family. In addition, each time you place an order you are contributing to our programme.

VOLUNTEERING

Classroom and field trip volunteers require police clearance.  Please consider getting a police check this month!  You could help us once a term, once a month or every other week. We will send home information when volunteers are needed.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK

This program, which runs during the first half of the year, is part of the our Social Studies curriculum. It is a way for us to get to know each other and to celebrate who we are. It is also a great opportunity for students to become more comfortable presenting in front of a group.  Each student will have a week when s/he is the "Student of the Week". During their week, students will share pictures and special items from home. We will use the information presented to write a class story about each student.

Please check our Class News page in your child's Link Book for his/her week.

GYM

We have gym every Monday and Wednesday. Please help your child find comfortable clothes to wear to school on these days since no time will be allotted for changing into gym clothes.

LIBRARY

Our class will visit the library every Friday. While at the library, each student will have an opportunity to take out two books. Students have the choice of taking both books home or leaving one in their desks to read after they are finished assigned work. Please help your child remember to bring back the borrowed books each week on library day. Only two books are allowed out at a time. Students with outstanding library books will not be able to take out any new books on Library Day.
