"We think and understand more
rapidly when we work together,
because of the link between talking
and thinking, between explaining
and understanding"

The Royal Commission on Learning, Volume 1

Dear Teachers,

I started using Literature Circles thanks to a teaching partner I had last year. He provided me with a general idea of the process and copies of his black line masters. Away I went, hungry for something different than the regular novel study, and looking for something to spice up my resume, I began my Literature Circles. Along the way the students knew they were part of an experiment and they were the guinea pigs. They were happy to join in because it was a bit different, and it seemed to allow them more freedom, and time to talk. As we went through I managed to tweak our process and refine, but along the way I noticed some distinct things going on: The kids were eager to read, and the kids were eager to join in their book discussions. My ESL student started to read aloud, the kids who didn't read....did. There was laughing, there was critical comment, there was peer behaviour modification, and all this happened with out much of my encouragement. I said to myself "I've got to do this again"...unfortunately it was June, and I would have to wait till the next school year, but in the mean time I would take a Reading 1 Additional Qualifications Course (PLP free!) and gear my study towards Literature Circles. Thus this web site.
I hope you enjoy and can use the content provided on the Teachers page. I have posted some original and modified black line masters for your use. Please visit the
student pages for how they can be used. Also provided are some of the resources that I plan to use and modify for the following years, more can be found on the Links page.
