Learner Profile:
Today’s students are living in an international community. The Halton District School Board’s International Languages (Elementary) Program is a non-credit program that is open to all elementary school-age children (JK to Grade 8) regardless of their cultural or ethnic background. Educational research demonstrates that learning or maintaining a 2nd or 3rd language has a positive effect on all aspects of a child’s educational development.
Description of Program:
The International Languages (Elementary) Program is available to all children in elementary schools in Ontario whose parents/guardians wish them to learn a language in addition to Canada’s official languages (English and French).
Languages currently being offered include:
Arabic, Cantonese, German, Greek, Hebrew, Korean, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Turkish
Classes are held on the weekend, at various sites throughout the Halton Region. Classes are 2½ hours per week*. The International Languages (Elementary) Program begins in September and runs throughout the school year until May/June. New language classes can be formed for any language group that can guarantee 25 eligible students. Note: Some programs may not be suitable for intermediate students learning a language for the first time.
*"Community groups, with the co-operation of a school board, may arrange for additional instruction beyond the two and one-half hours per week. In doing so, they must assume full financial responsibility for all aspects of such additional program time." (Ontario Ministry of Education - Resource Guide - Roles and Responsibilities)
Exit Pathways:
From this program, students may continue in a language program offered as a high school credit.
