SALEP
Supervised Alternative Learning for Excused Pupils

Learner Profile:

Students are 14 or 15 years of age and disengaged from school. An extensive series of interventions has occurred at the school or district level and attendance counsellor and/or social worker support has been involved with the student and family.

Description of Program:

Supervised Alternative Learning for Excused Pupils (Regulation 308) allows a pupil of compulsory school age to be excused from daily school attendance within specific parameters as described in the regulation. The SALEP program does not include a classroom component and the student is then excused to work full-time or part-time in the community.  Assisting in securing employment and monitoring is largely the responsibility of the parent, although the social worker attached to SALEP will maintain contact with the student and employer and will file periodic reports with the school.  In most cases the SALEP contract is approved for a period of one semester or less with the strong recommendation to return to school at the end of the contract.

Exit Pathways:

After completing SALEP, students are encouraged to return to their home school but may consider continuing at Gary Allan High School in the SCORE, STEP or Ex-cel programs.

Application Process:

The SALEP committee meets 7 times a year and will accept applications from parents through their son/daughter’s school.  Typically, the parent would pursue such an application as a last resort after all possible interventions at the school or district level have been exhausted.
