A program for students aged 16-20 years old interested in a trade as a future career area after high school. This practical hands on program consists of technology credits, academic work and cooperative education. Options available are construction and landscaping in Burlington only. Learner Profile: The target group of students are 16 – 20 year olds who are looking for a “hands on” experiential approach to learning and are interested in acquiring practical skills for employment. Description of Program: The program is composed of a blend of Landscape, Horticulture and Masonry. Students registered in this program would take a combination of technology credits as well as compulsory credits, credit recovery and/or co-operative education and have the opportunity of earning 5 or more credits. The compulsory credit component will be delivered in a “hands on” environment and integrated into the practical program so that key learnings are taught in context. The program will be delivered in second semester at the Burlington campus and will allow for numerous opportunities to apply skills learned to real projects on campus and in the community. Students enrolled will learn: • the various career opportunities in the landscape trade; • landscape and garden design principles; • how to work with paving stones and build retaining walls; • greenhouse operations and plant cultivation techniques; • plant identification and properties and their effective use in gardens. Exit Pathways: Students leaving the program are well equipped to further study landscaping as a career through the workplace or apprenticeship opportunities. Students may also choose to further their learning in a regular high school program or continue at Gary Allan High School in the STEP or Self- Reliant Learning programs. Application Process: See your guidance counsellor or call Nicole Hagley at 905-632-2944 x129 to make an appointment to register. Contacts: Nicole Hagly, Gary Allan - Burlington, 905-632-2944 x129. |
