The Role of the Special Education Resource Teacher (SERT): There are several things that a SERT does, this is a simplified version. The Special Education Resource Teacher (SERT) is responsible for collaborating with parents, teachers, administration, Educational Assistants, and other board and community personnel to meet the needs of students at all ages in the school. They coordinate the creation of Individual Education Plans and monitors the progress of students on IEPs. Collaborates with all parties involved to create and support programs for students with special needs. Is part of the team that creates other documents needed for students, safety or behaviour plans etc. A SERT participates in all meetings pertaining to students with any sort of special needs. Most importantly the SERT will work with individual
students, small groups, in the classroom or out of the classroom to assist the student in reaching their full potential.

The Role of the School Child and Youth Counsellor: The School Child and Youth Counsellor (SCYC) is a member of the Special Services Team of the Halton District School Board. SCYC’s provide services to students, and their families, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 and beyond in some cases. Some students may require assistance in dealing with behavioural, social, emotional and academic issues in their school environment. SCYC’s support students, parents and school staff in coping with these challenges.
The Role of the Youth Settlement Worker: The Youth Settlement Worker is a liaison between the school and parents who are new to the country or may not speak English. In connecting with the school they can teach parents about the Canadian education system, school routines, parenting in Canada(laws etc.) as well as working with teachers so that they have a better understanding of where their students are from and what they are used to. There are outside services that a Youth Settlement Worker can assist with as well, ex., finding family doctors, connecting parents with outside programs (ROCK etc.), language classes for children, a passport or visa applications.
