French Language Program
The goal of a French Immersion program is to be able to communicate a message applying the vocabulary and language structures that the student has aquired. With daily practice the bank of vocabulary will increase thereby improving fluency.
Since the emphasis of the Immersion program is developing oral communication skills, the students are encouraged to express themselves in French to the best of their ability with their teacher and peers. For grade one, that means responding to questions asked in French, using some French vocabulary in sentences, and using common expressions ie "Est-ce que je peux" when asking permission. Grade twos are expected to use French expressions and common vocabulary in term one, but will be working towards speaking only in French in term two. Grade ones benefit from the extended vocabulary used by the grade twos, and often rise to the occasion of trying new expressions! The Grade twos are ambassadors to the grade ones, and improve their own vocabulary and confidence as they introduce
their language knowledge to the Grade ones. The children are taught expressions and strategies to help facilitate expression, the classroom is full of vocabulary and peers are a resource as well. Oral presentations are modelled and practised in class.
Reading is taught through a lot of Read Aloud where the teacher is modelling decoding and reading comprehension strategies. The students gradually develop their skills through Shared Reading, where the whole class and the students are practising skills together, then Guided Reading where small groups are applying specific strategies for their level until they finally progress to Independent Reading. Students will also be responding to reading by: retelling, relating or reflecting. Naturally there will be a lot of repetition to develop fluency and deeper comprehension.
Writing will be developed following a pattern or a model. The students will also develop their skills of the 6+ 1 Writing Traits which are: conventions, ideas, word choice, sentence structure, voice and sentence fluency.
**Please note, Only oral French is assessed in grade one and grade two terms one and two. Assessment of reading and writing begins in term three for Grade two.
