Home-school Connections

Welcome to our wonderful school!  At James W. Hill we focus on excellent feedback as part of our learning cycle.  Parent involvement and communication is an important component of this approach.  Your child will be bringing home skills practice for you to assist them with at home.  Outlined below are the programmes we will be working on together this year.

I look forward to working with your child this year at James W. Hill.  Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions at hardmanl@hdsb.ca, or at the school at 905.845.2333.

Comptines- Each Friday your child will be bringing home a duotang with a new poem (comptine) and/or song (chanson) that we have been working on in class.  Please help your child to present their poem or song to you for review.  The "comptines" folders are to be returned each Tuesday to school.

Les Mots de la semaine- In the text of the agenda, your child will record some of the words of the week we are learning.  The words will vary depending on grade, and will be based on our poems, songs or focus for the week.  We will work on the list each day focusing on reading, syllables, word families and writing.  The words will then be part of our Word Wall.  These words are for practice only, there will NOT be a memorized "dictee" in class. Although the children do not need to memorize the spelling of these words, they could practise them at home, play games with them such as cut and paste the words in puzzles, print them on a white board, or spell them in magnets.  Children who are tactile learners may enjoy tracing the words in play doh or a tray of sand.

Take Home Reading- Each Friday, your grade two child will be bringing home a levelled reader in a zippy with a note pad. The "carnet de lecture" is the note pad used to record your reading at home.  Directions are inside the front cover of the carnet.  Try to read with your child each evening when you have the carnet at home.  Do NOT allow your child to colour in the levelled readers as they are shared with their classmates.

Many parents ask what they can do to work with their children at home, particularly if the parents  do not speak French.  Here are some ideas from the Ontario Curriculum for French Immersion.

The Role of Parents
Studies show that students perform better in school if their parents are involved in their education.
Even if they do not speak or understand French, parents still have an important role to
play in supporting their child’s learning. By reading the curriculum, parents can find out what
their children are learning in each grade and why they are learning it. This awareness will
enable parents to discuss their children’s work with them, communicate with teachers, interpret
their children’s report cards, and work with teachers to improve their children’s learning.
There are many other ways in which parents can express their interest in their children’s education.
Participating in parent conferences, working on the school council, and encouraging
children to complete assignments at home and to pursue opportunities outside the classroom
to extend their skills in French are just a few examples.

Updates and programme information will be provided in a paperless format by email.  Please email me if you are not getting updates.

Thank you for your interest and support in our programme.  Please contact me at the school at any time with questions or feedback.
