The Library at Heritage Glen is a very busy place. Students, staff, and parents use the library for literacy, computers, smart board lessons, media resources, computer activities, meetings and a variety of other learning. Everyone is welcome! As the year progresses you can check out the link for special events that will happen in our library throughout the year. Some of these include the Forest of Reading Book clubs, co-curricular activities (chess club, puzzle club), and the Bookfair in the winter. |
We have over 500 students at Heritage Glen who use the library. Mrs. Larsen, our part-time teacher library is in the library period 3-6 running programs with other teaching staff and students. We have a wonderful library technician, Mrs. Price who visits us every 8 school days. Our library relies on the help of some special parent volunteers who help with book circulation, shelving, searching, and decorating. We really appreciate these volunteers and the time they donate to keeping our library running smoothly. If you would like to help out in our library please contact Mrs. Larsen at larsenh@hdsb.ca or come in for a visit! |
The Blue Spruce Award™ is a provincial primary reading program which brings recently published Canadian children's picture books to Ontario children ages 4 to 7 in kindergarten through to grade two. For many children, this is their first introduction to the world of books; it is a very exciting time for everyone. The students will peruse 10 nominated Canadian picture books and then vote for their favourite book. Based on student voting across the province, the best picture book is then selected and the author/illustrator is honoured with the Blue Spruce Award |
The Silver Birch Awards™ are given by Grade 3, 4, 5 and 6 students in a spectacular ceremony held annually in May before fifteen hundred of their peers. Silver Birch Express caters to students in Grade 3 and 4 while the Silver Birch Club targets readers in Grade 5 and 6. The children choose winners in Fiction and Non-Fiction when they cast their ballots at the end of April/Early May. The program is administered by the Ontario Library Association and run by teacher-librarians
and teachers in schools and by children's librarians in public libraries. But the choice belongs to the children. And, in their tens of thousands, they know what they are doing. |
The Red Maple Award™ reading program is offered for the enjoyment of students in Grades 7 and 8. The program, like the Association's Silver Birch Awards™ reading program, gives students who have read a minimum number of nominated titles the opportunity to vote with a large group of their peers for the nominated title that they feel should win the Red Maple Award™ each year. At Heritage Glen this year our Red Maple Book Club will take place using the online student conference set up through students' chatt accounts. Students will be expected to post reviews as they read books, pose question and respond to the conversations of others as they work
through their books. These leaders will also have the opportunity to help run some of the books clubs for our primary and early junior students. |
