The book fair this year will take place from Thursday, Jan. 26 to Thursday, Feb. 2.  We will be offering classes and parents a chance to preview books Friday all day and Monday morning.  Sales will begin Monday after lunch and continue up to Thursday morning.  Parents are welcome to come in and make purchases as well.  For every $10 spent in book fair products, $6 goes directly back to our school library which makes it a fantastic way for us to obtain new and high interest books for our library collection.

Students are encouraged to listen to the announcements over the next two weeks to hear about contests and promotions for the event.  Flyers advertising the books will be sent home with students along with a letter providing a bit more detail about the fair and the $50 draw prize.

If you are interested in more information about the book fair or are able to volunteer to help out during this time please contact Heather Larsen by e-mail at larsenh@hdsb.ca or by calling the school.

* Heritage Glen is on Twitter!

Each day at Heritage Glen, the morning announcements let students know about clubs, sports, upcoming events and important messages. We all know that sometimes students forget what they heard in the morning or don’t write relevant information in their agendas.

We have been testing Twitter as a means of publishing announcements and reminders to our students and school community and have had good feedback. The purpose of posting our morning announcements and other timely reminders on Twitter is to have that information accessible to students and their families at all times.

You can follow us on Twitter at “hgannouncements” to keep up to date at all times. If you follow us then the notices will show up in your Twitter feed. Alternatively, you can just look us up as needed on Twitter.com.

I also encourage you to have your son/daughter follow us on Twitter if they have an account.

Please note that this Twitter account is not an interactive account at this time and is being used to post Heritage Glen announcements. If you would like to contact the school, please call us at 905-847-5496 or email me at phillipsb@hdsb.ca.

Give it a try! I look forward to your feedback.

* FROM SCHOOL COUNCIL:
Dear Heritage Glen Parents,

Did you know that our neighbourhood could  fall within the boundary of the new “West Oak” High School that opens September 2012?  This may have an impact on our children at Heritage Glen.

As members of the Boundary Review committee that is determining possible boundary and program (e.g. English and French Immersion) scenarios for ward 4 secondary schools it is important for us to get your input.

The Halton District School Board (HDSB) has written criteria that will be used to determine which boundary/program scenarios are better than others.  We have the opportunity to give feedback to the committee on these criteria and give new criteria suggestions. We would like your input, but we need your response ASAP so we can give feedback to the committee on Thursday February 24th! Please click on the link below to fill out this short survey.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QNPFY6F

We will be gathering the results by 8 am, Wednesday February 23rd. Thank-you so much for your participation!

Sincerely,
Laurel (laurelbest@cogeco.ca) and Paula (paulamacdonald@cogeco.ca )

Later on February 12, 2010 the victim in this matter was re-interviewed by police. During the interview investigators learned that although the victim did feel she was being followed by a suspicious van, and did fear for her safety, she was not actually grabbed by a male suspect.

Police investigators canvassed the area where the incident had taken place and were able to locate the suspicious van in question. Police interviewed the driver and are confident he was in the area for legitimate purposes and had no criminal or inappropriate intentions in relation to the teenage girl.

* Apologies to the Eco Club at Heritage Glen! The following two items were missed from the newsletter going home on Friday. Please note the date for Litterless Lunch Day...

Environmental News:
Heritage Glen is striving to be Eco School Certified. As a part of this process we are getting members of the whole school involved in meeting regularly to discuss and plan how to make Heritage Glen a greener place.

The Environment Club is an extra-curricular club that Grade 4 to Grade 8 students can join and participate in to improve our environmental impact. In November the club introduced the the Eco School stickers to help save energy by turning “Monitor’s off” and “Light’s Off” in our school. We will also be distributing the G.O.O.S.E. bins (for paper that is "Good On One Side") to the whole school, to encourage students and staff to reuse paper. Some upcoming events planed for December and January are litterless lunch days. Everyone can get involved and be a part of making HG a more environmentally friendly place.

If you have any suggestions please pass them along.

Litterless Lunch Day:
On December 10th and January 14th we will be encouraging students to bring reusable containers to school in order to produce less waste. We encourage students to reduce, reuse and then recycle. Mark these dates on your calendar!

Thanks,
Ms. Sohaj and Miss Hudson
