Words of the Week
5 new words are sent home every week.
Please talk about these words at home.......e.g. what sounds do you hear, do they have 'main floor', 'attic' or 'basement' letters, can you think of any other words with the same patterns, are there any small words hidden inside?

Homework
The homework guidelines from the Halton Board suggest that grade two children should be spending 10 to 20 minutes on homework each evening. As our focus at West Oak this year is reading, we will be emphasizing this in our Homework program. So snuggle up and enjoy a book with your child every night. You can have them complete a simple activity in their Home Reading book which will be coming home soon.
Making Words homework comes home once a week.  This is an opportunity to help your child look for patterns in words and discover many Word Families together. Research has shown that children who play with words (i.e. constructing and deconstructing them) learn to spell words more quickly than those who study 10 words for a weekly spelling test. In grade 2 we find that spelling in the children's daily writing improves with consistent use of the Making Words activity. Please let me know what you think about this activity.
R.A.P. books go home on Friday nights, ask your child to read the weekly poem to as many people as possible and return the R.A.P. book to school on Monday morning.
Thank you for taking the time to assist your child with his/her homework. It is important that your child has immediate feedback to help with his/her learning. Homework in grade two should be a fun family time. Enjoy and happy homeworking!
