IRHS Halton Math Contest
Tuesday, May 19, 2009
Room 309, 3pm - 5pm
Registration Information
General Contest Information
The contest will consist of four or five problems to be solved in 2 hours. All problems will be distributed at the start of the contest. Only one copy of the problem set will be given to each team. There will be both a senior competition and a junior competition.
Team Makeup
A team consists of no more than 3 members, each a full-time student of Iroquois Ridge High School. Teams may compete with fewer than 3 members, but this may be a disadvantage to the team.
Junior Competition to qualify, the student must not be registered as a student higher than Grade 10.
Senior Competition there are no restrictions, any student may compete at the senior level, but it is recommended that the student has completed, or is currently taking a Grade 11 math course.
Questions
Questions will be of the Thinking/Inquiry/Problem Solving variety and they will each have one valid solution. There will be no proofs. The level of the questions for the Junior Contest will be set at the Grade 9 level, and the level for the Senior Contest will be set at the Grade 11 level.
Contest Procedure
All teams will be given one copy of the problem set (consisting of 4 or 5 questions) to solve during the 2 hour period and a score sheet. When the team feels that it has a correct solution, the team will have the judge score the solution (in an as yet, undetermined manner).
The judge will mark the time of completion on the score sheet and the judge will indicate a correct answer. If the solution is correct the first time, a score of 100 points will be awarded. Teams are allowed to submit a solution three times, to score points on each question. If it is correct on the second attempt, a score of 75 points will be awarded. If it is correct on the third attempt, a score of 50 points will be awarded. If it is still incorrect, a score of 0 will be awarded.
Time points for each question can be awarded as well for correct solutions. Points are awarded at a rate of 1 point per minute remaining in the competition. For example, if a team scores a correct solution with 75 minutes remaining, they will gain 75 points.
