Dear Parents and Guardians of 5/6,
Now that the warmer weather has arrived we can look forward to many events at James W. Hill!
The Spring Fair date has been released, it will take place on Saturday, May 26th. Please save the date for some fun!
The grade 6s will also be writing the EQAO test.
During the week of May 28th, our grade 3 and 6 students will be participating in the Education Quality and Accountability Office’s (EQAO’s) Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics.
Students will complete a variety of assessment activities in six one-hour sessions designed to allow them to demonstrate their skills and knowledge relating to reading, writing and mathematics as described in The Ontario Curriculum. These province-wide tests are developed by Ontario teachers and assessment experts and resemble the work children do in class every day.
EQAO has developed a Parent Bulletin to give you more information about the assessments and an understanding of what to expect. The bulletin is available in over 20 languages on the EQAO Web site (www.eqao.com) under “Parent Resources.”
If you have any questions, please call Mrs. McRae or Ms. Echeverria. You can also call EQAO at 1-888-327-7377 with questions or to obtain a copy of the Parent Bulletin.
In terms of the curriculum, we are finishing up with decimals and moving on to fractions in Math. For both the Literacy and Social Studies portions of our day, the grade 5s have been studying the Ancient Civilization of Egypt, while the grade 6s are learning about the First Nations of Canada. In Science we have been finishing up the building of our stored powered and electronic cars, while beginning to focus on our next units of space (6) and matter and materials (5). Be sure to ask the grade 5s about their Silly Putty! Basketball has been our focus in Phys. Ed. these days, and we will be moving on to Dance NEXT!
