Day by Day
May 7th - Ecotourism introductions - today we looked at the natural environment and brainstormed locations for travel and the activities that take place in these environments. Students finished the class by creating a top 10 list of rules for ecotourism.
May 1st - Amusement Parks - today we watched a video on building one of the greatest coasters, and then students read an article on the amusement park industry.
April 30th - Amazing Race - students watched an episode of the amazing race. Afterwards, students completed their journeys and map of the race. Students were given the first assignment on the Amazing Race. It can be found in the Unit 2 folder.
April 16th - 18th - computer lab - students were assigned "Trip to the Olympics". They had the week to research and work on the assignment. The assignment can be found in the Unit 2 folder.
April 13th - 1st Travel and Tourism Olympics - today the class competed in the olympics.
April 12th - Olympics - today we looked at the 2012 London Olympics. There is a powerpoint in the Unit 2 folder. Afterwards, students were divided into groups for the "1st Travel and Tourism Olympics". As a group, students were required to create an event, team name and slogan.
April 11th - Amazing Race day. Students watched the next episode of the amazing race. While watching it, they completed their journal. Afterwards, students plotted the race and wrote a reflection on the episode.
April 10th - students presented their international event
April 5th - studnts prepared an international events presentation
April 4th - Students researched an international event and prepared a presentation
April 3rd - Today we will focus on International Events. Student brainstormed a list of international events, as well as the positive and negative effects these events could have on a region. Students then read a case study on Toronto's bid for the olympics and sustainable urban tourism.

April 2nd - Today we studied Disney and the affect it has on society. Students read an article "Guide to Disneyfication" and developed a note as a class, did a virtual tour of Disney World, and looked at the negative side of Disney through a reading "Inside the Dream Machine"
March 30th - Today we watched the Amazing Race, and worked on the assignment associated with it. Afterwards, we started to discuss Disney (a topic we will look at further on Monday).
March 29th - Today we finished watching the Amazing Race. STudents plotted the route and completed their reflection afterwards. We also took a note on preparing for tourism and the role of the private and public sector.
March 28 - Today we started watching the Amazing Race. During each episode, students plot the route and record cultural information.
March 22nd - March 27- students were in the computer lab working on the Designing a Cruise in the Caribbean (assignment can be found in unit 2).
March 21st - students copied a note on the cruise industry and then finished their map on Caribbean ports.

March 20th - students watched a documentary on Oasis of the Seas - The Greatest Cruiseship of all Times.
March 19th - we reviewed mapping skills including grid reading and scale. Students completed an activity utilizing these skills.
March 8th- Students will be in the computer lab comparing different cruiselines and what they have to offer.
March 7th - students finished off their article analysis on The Somali pirates and wrote a reflection on the topics discussed in class.
March 6th - Today we listed to an audio interview on Somali pirates. Students had 4 questions to answer while listining. We discussed the interview afterwards. Students then started completing an artle analysis on Somali pirates which compared different views on the situration.
Mar. 5th - Today we focused on Somali pirates. Students listened to the National on this topic, and then completed an article comparrison.
Feb 28th - Students watched a video on the Caribbean to provide an overview of the region. Afterwards, students analyzed the St. Martin/St Maarten case study in the Canada Travels textbook.
Feb. 27th - Students presented their Make an Ad assignment. Afterwards, we started into the second unit (tourism and the economy) with a focus on the multiplier effect.

Feb. 22nd - Marketing and tourism. Students will look at the 4 P's of tourism. Students will look at magazine ad and evaluate their effectiveness.
Homework: students are to interview someone using the
following questions:
1. Age:
2. What do they like to do in their spare time?
3. Do they like to travel? Why or why not?
4. What was their favourite vacation and why?
5. What stops them fromtraveling?
Feb. 21st - Students will complete an issue analysis on the Greater Addo National Park.
Feb. 16th - Issues in Tourism
- we went over how to analyze an issue (stakeholders, impacts to society, economy, and environment). Small groups selected an issue, and developed an issue analysis. This will be shared on Tuesday.
Feb. 15th - Students completed the homework Trends in Traveling.
Feb. 14th - Students presented their Travelling Through Canada assignment.

Feb. 13th - Students worked in the computer lab on the Travelling Through Canada assignment. It is due tomorrow.
Feb. 10th - Students worked in the computer lab on the Travelling Through Canada assignment. The assignment can be found in Unit 1: intro to travel and tourism.
Feb. 9th - We continued watching One Week. Students were required to record places and landmarks they saw throughout the movie, and answer a few questions afterwards.
Feb. 8th - Today we reviewed where we have been in Canada as a class and where we would like to go in Canada. We also looked at some of the roadside attractions that you can see as you drive through Canada (eg. Big Nickel in Sudbury). We started watching One Week half way through the period.
Feb. 7th - today we looked at both the motivators and barriers of travel. Afterwards, students completed world reference map.
Feb. 6th - today we went over the course outline, and discussed where we have been. Afterwards, developed characteristics on what make or breaks a vacation.
