October News
Class 2-3
Open House
It was a pleasure meeting so many families at our Open House! Your children enjoyed giving you a tour of our classroom and sharing their work with you.
Indoor Shoes
Please remember to send a pair of indoor running shoes that are labelled with your child’s name.
French Language Arts and Health
French Language Arts will be integrated with Health and will focus on autumn and the five senses. Through art, poems, songs, books and writing activities students will learn to recognize and discuss in French the signs of autumn. Autumn vocabulary is posted on Mme Moonjé’s website. Below is a list of the Health vocabulary.
- le goût, la langue, je goûte (taste)
- l’odorat, le nez, je sens (smell)
- la vue, les yeux, l’oeil, je vois (sight)
- l’oue, les oreilles, j’entends (hearing)
- le toucher, la peau, je touche (touch)
Montre et Raconte
French oral presentations will focus on autumn and the five senses. All written work for the presentation will be completed in class. Students will be responsible for practising the presentation at home. More information is coming home soon.
Weekly Words
As mentioned in a previous letter, students are gluing French and English weekly words in their agendas. You may have noticed that for English two lists are included: List A contains high frequency words and List B includes our more challenging words. Please encourage your child to read the words and find them in our weekly poems.
Poems/Songs Duotangs
We hope that families are enjoying our weekly poems and songs. Once your child has shared the poem with you please remember to complete the tracking sheet that is glued on the inside front cover of the duotang. Duotangs go home on Friday and are due the following Wednesday.
Monthly Calendar Activities
October calendar activities are due on Monday, October 29th. Merci!
English Language Arts
In English we have been building our Daily 5 reading stamina by choosing “good fit” books and practising the reading strategy of checking for comprehension and going back to re-read both words and pictures. Another reading strategy that we are working on is cross checking to verify that the words and pictures look and sound right as well as make sense. During the next few weeks we will be working on writing personal retells using the 5Ws (who, what, where, when, why).
Social Studies
We are finishing our unit on Canada and World Connections. Students will be writing a unit test. Please refer to the agenda for the test date. Unit work and more information will be sent home prior to the test.
Science
Our new unit will focus on Matter and Energy - Properties of Liquids and Solids. Students will:
- Investigate the properties of liquids and solids
- Investigate interactions that occur as a result of mixing and/or dissolving liquids and solids
- Investigate liquids and solids in terms buoyancy and/or absorption
- Describe the characteristics of liquid water and solid water
- Explain the meaning of international symbols that give information on the safety of substances
For definitions and vocabulary, please refer to the vocabulary sheet posted on our website.
Math
In our next unit in Math we are going to be working with number relationships. Throughout this unit, we will be working to read and print number words to 20, estimate the number of objects and check by counting, counting forward to 100 and backward from 20 using a number line and a 100’s chart. We will also be counting by 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s and 25s and developing strategies for adding and subtracting.
IT
By the end of the month of October, each student will be able to log on to the computer without using their memory card with their ID and password on it. We will also be working with different programs learning to print, save and re-open previous work.
Monkey Money
I am sure that you have heard, or seen your child’s monkey money. Monkey money will be used within the classroom in regards to behaviour and responsibility. Each student will start with the same amount of money every Monday ($30), depending on how the week goes money can be taken away for behaviour, incomplete homework, etc. On Friday, depending on how much money your child has left they will receive a reward (i.e., monkey ticket, sticker) or consequence (i.e., loss of some recess, note in the agenda). The children in the past have seemed to really enjoy this money program. I am sure you will be hearing a lot about it over the next few months.
Learning Skills
We have been focusing on the development of learning skills as an integral part of your child’s education. In particular we have been discussing how to be responsible. Students have set a goal regarding responsibility and are tracking their progress in meeting that goal. Soon, we will be sending home a progress note regarding responsibility. The next learning skill that we will focus on is organization.
À bientôt,
Mme Moonjé and Mrs. Smith
