January 2013 Newsletter
Class 2-3 Monkey Business1142013_92352_3.jpgJanuary Newsletter

Happy New Year!  We hope that everyone had a fun and relaxing break.  In French, we are excited about starting a new unit in Science, finishing our assessment tasks for the celebrations unit, continuing with Literacy Centres and reviewing winter vocabulary.

Science
Our new unit will focus on Air and Water in the Environment.  Students will:
  • Investigate the characteristics of air and water, including the stages of the water cycle
  • Identify the three states of water (solid, liquid, gas)
  • Assess personal and family uses of water
  • Describe ways in which living things depend on air and water
  • Assess the impact of human activities on air and water and plan a course of action to help keep the air and water in our local community clean
Please refer to the attached vocabulary sheet. This information is also available on Madame’s website.

Calendar Activities
The calendar activities for January have been sent home.  Due to the P.D. Day on Friday, February 1st, the calendar is due on Thursday, January 31st.

French Literacy
Our class will begin French literacy centres focusing on making sentences, listening to French stories on CD and winter vocabulary. A list of winter vocabulary will be coming home soon so that students can review these words at home.  The list can also be found on Madame’s website.

French Montre et Raconte
Our next topic for oral presentations will be related to a favourite winter activity and the 5W questions.  All written work will be done in class.  Students will be responsible for practising and preparing a visual prop at home.  Presentations will begin towards the end of January. Stay tuned for more information!

English Language Arts
For the next month, we are focusing on adjectives, antonyms and contractions.  In writing we will be learning how to write an explanation and will be integrating it with our Science unit on air and water. The students will write an explanation of the water cycle and will include an introductory sentence and diagrams. In reading we are continuing with determining the main idea of both fiction and non-fiction texts.

Media Literacy
This month students will examine different types of posters (posters that persuade, provide information, or have a message).  We will be discussing various elements of a poster (font, colour, size, layout, etc.) and will be creating a poster relating to our Science unit.

Mathematics - Data Management and Geometry
Our learning goals for Data Management are to collect, organize, describe and label data on graphs, as well as ask questions about the data.  In Geometry, students will describe, compare and sort 3-D solids according to their attributes.

Information Technology
Students will continue to use the student conference group as well as email to complete activities and email completed work back to the conference. These activities will relate to Graphing, Geometry and Language Arts.

Classroom Supplies
Students may wish to replenish their pencil kits with glue sticks, sharpened pencils and an eraser.

Winter Clothing
With the eventual arrival of snowy weather, we would appreciate it if students have a change of clothes, as well as an extra pair of socks and mittens in their backpacks.  Please label all winter clothing such as boots, mittens, hats, scarves and snow pants.  This is very helpful when trying to locate missing items. Thank you!

À bientôt,

Mme Moonjé & Mrs. Smith
