Science
During the month of April, students will be building a pull toy as their culminating activity for our unit on Structures and Mechanisms-Simple Machines.  Students will make a sketch of their pull toy in class, as well as list the materials necessary to build the toy. Students are asked to bring the necessary materials to school where the toy building will take place.  We will also be presenting our “objet mystère” during the month of April.  Students will choose a simple machine, write five clues about it and present it to the class.  All work, including oral practice will take place in class.

English Language Arts
Our reading strategy for the next month is visualizing. Through poems, stories and non-fiction texts, students are learning to use mental pictures created from words to further understand what they are reading. Our next writing form is procedural and will be integrated with our Science unit.  Students will write about the steps needed to build their pull-toy, as well as a list of materials, an introduction and conclusion. As part of our media literacy unit students will create a commercial advertizing their pull toy.

French Language Arts
This month, students will begin literacy centres based on spring.  The students will listen to French stories on CD, review high frequency vocabulary, dramatize short stories and write complete sentences.  Students will also be reading with the teacher, alone and in groups. Our weekly words “les mots de la semaine” will continue to focus on vowel sounds.  Students are encouraged to review reading and spelling these words at home.

Visual Arts
This month, we are continuing our work on geometric shapes and shapes found in nature.

Social Studies
In Canada and World Connections, the students will be identifying similarities and differences in food, clothing, homes, recreation, transportation and language between their community and Japan. After exploring these features, students will research information on another community and present their findings in the form of a “quadrarama” (3D model).

Mathematics
The next unit will focus on addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers.
The learning goals for this unit are as follows:
  • Model addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers on a place-value mat
  • Use the standard algorithm as one way to add and subtract two-digit numbers (regrouping)
  • Pose and solve numbers requiring addition and subtraction
It’s going to be a busy and fun month!  Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

À bientôt,
Mme Moonjé and Mrs. Smith
