Class 2-3 Monkey Business
May-June Newsletter
French Language Arts
In French, we are focusing on reading strategies, independent reading, and reading comprehension. Once a week, we will be reading a short non-fiction text about a different animal group (e.g., mammals, birds, reptiles, etc.). Rather than a weekly poem, students will be bringing home these texts in their Home and School Connections duotang for further practice. The students are also continuing to work on their spring literacy centres. Attached is a list of spring vocabulary.
Integrated Science Unit
Our last unit for Science is Growth and Changes in Animals. The students will be investigating similarities and differences in the characteristics of various animals. We will examine the life cycles of animals and discuss ways in which animals adapt to their environment. In the computer lab, students will be using Pebblego to research an animal of their choice and record information using jot notes. They will then write an English report in the form of informative/fiction, similar to the format of “Diary of a Worm”. In Visual Arts, we will create a diorama of the animal in its habitat using plasticine and objects found in nature. For this activity, students will need to bring in a shoebox. More information will come home later this month, along with the
date in which we need materials for this activity. Please do not send in the shoebox until further notice.
Class Trip
On Tuesday, May 28th we will be going to African Lion Safari to support our Science unit on animals. Permission forms and payment are available on cashless. Please print and return the permission form by May 19th.
Media Literacy-Movie Critic Presentation
Students will choose a favourite movie or new release from the movie theatres and convince the class that it is the best movie. They will create and present a poster advertizing the movie. More information will be coming home towards the beginning of June.
Health
In Health, we will be discussing safe usage of prescription and non prescription medication.
Mathematics
For the month of May, we will be working on Geometry, specifically location and movement. Students will learn to describe the relative locations (e.g., beside, two steps to the right), and the movements of objects on a map (e.g., the path shows that he walked around the desk, down the aisle, and over to the window). We will draw simple maps of familiar settings and describe the relative locations of objects on the maps. For example, students will draw a map of the classroom, showing the locations of the different pieces of furniture. Students will also create and describe symmetrical designs using a variety of tools (e.g., pattern blocks, tangrams, paper and pencil.
Once again it’s going to be a busy and fun couple of months! Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
À bientôt,
Mme Moonjé and Mrs. Smith
