Words Of The Week
Here are some ways you can have your child work with these words:
* Clap, snap, or stamp the syllables in the word.
* Say other words with the same patterns (for example: went, sent, bent, lent).
* Discover what smaller words are hidden within!
* Find all the vowels (a e i o u /y) in a word, colour all the consonants.
* Make all the vowels disappear!! Then try to replace them in their correct place.
( w__ l k = walk, b__ c __ __ s __ = because)
* If there are contractions, what two words make the contraction?
* Put the words in alphabetical order.
* Find interesting letter combinations - create fun ways to talk about them, for example double consonants or vowels could become "proud pairs", or say some of the neat tricks your teachers or parents used to teach unusual combinations ( "i before e except after c", or, "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking" - like in ai).

Homework
The homework guidelines from the Halton Board suggest that grade one children should be spending 5-10 minutes on homework each evening. As our focus at West Oak this year is reading, we will be emphasizing this in our Homework program. So snuggle up and enjoy a book with your child every night. You can have them complete a simple activity in their Home Reading book which will be coming home soon.
Shared Reading books go home on Friday nights. Ask your child to read the weekly poem to as many people as possible and return the Shared Reading book to school on Monday morning.
Thank you for taking the time to assist your child with his/her homework. It is important that your child has immediate feedback to help with his/her learning. Homework in grade one should be a fun family time. Enjoy and happy homeworking!

It takes a whole village to raise a child. African Proverb.
