GradeNine First Week Assignment:                             Sept. 6th 2011



Instructions:

Our goal for the first week is to:



1.Gain an understanding of the Elements of Art and the Principles of
   Design.

2. Complete three (3) drawing exercises based upon the elements of Art.

3. Hand in our best drawing at the end of Friday’s class (Fri. Sept.9th 2011).

4. Complete a first analysis of the artwork of your choice.
 (Length:One to Two well-developed paragraphs in length.)
 Due on Fri. Sept. 9th 2011.



TuesdaySept. 6th: Drawing Exercise One: Create a drawing of an event or idea from your summer vacation; you may choose a realistic or unrealistic event or idea. Use your imagination. Please demonstrate your skill at line, proportion, scale, value, and composition.

Identify one Learning Skill that you wish to focus upon for assessment and evaluation. Explain why you have chosen that particular Learning Skill. Provide two reasons why and how you will improve your ability in your chosen Learning Skill.
Please hand in your Learning Skills response at the  beginning of Wednesday’s period

Wednesday Sept. 7th: Drawing Exercise Two: Create a drawing of a portable object of your choice. Bring the object to class on Wednesday and be prepared to draw it in your sketchbook. Please demonstrate your practical understanding of line,shape, value and proportion.

Thursday Sept.8th:  Drawing Exercise Three: Three circles and a rectangle. Using three circles and a rectangle as the foundation for your drawing create a unique and original animated character
Please concentrate on the elements of shape,line and value

Friday Sept. 9th:  Final Draft of your best drawing is to be handed in at the end of the period. The analysis of your chosen artwork is to be handed in also.

By the end of the week each student will hand in:
A final drawing that represents their best effort at their application of line, shape, texture,value, perspective and composition.
An analysis of our favourite artwork that demonstrates a sincere effort and reflection
of our current thinking and communiction ability.

Welcome to the course! Please complete the Week one assignment.

Now that we have had three diagnostic assessments it is now time for your Elements of Art display to be handed in.
All displays are due at the end of the day on Friday Feb. 18th 2011 .
Our first unit will be the Prehistoric Art unit and  Tuesday Feb. 22nd 2011. We will go through the exemplars. The assignment will be online.

Prehistoric Drawing Journal Checklist:
1. Prehistoric one panel or cartoon strip
2. Prehistoric Artifact that has not been discovered yet
3. Prehistoric Article: Recent Research regarding Prehistoric Art/Anthropology
4. Prehistoric Chapter Summary: Art in Focus Chapter 4 p. 64 to 71
5. Prehistoric Oil Pastel studies and final assignment: Due: To be determined

Colour Theory Checklist:

1. Knowledge Component of the Colour Theory Quest
2. Rough copy of your Colour Theory composition

Canadian Art: April 19th 2011

Resource Journal: Create a drawing that is a response to the ideas or concepts
contained in the painting Horse and Train (1954) by Alex Colville
You may want to draw the same composition but include  two different
subjects: a bicycle and a bus, a tiger and a car etc.
Due: Thursday April 21st 2011

Wednesday April 27th: Canadian Art textbook example: Choose one artwork
from the textbook and use the style and/or content as an inspiration for your
own drawing.

Thursday April 28th: Canadian Identity/Local Identity
Brainstorm ideas around the word Burlington. If you were
asked to describe Burlington to someone from another part of the world what
images would be associated with Burlington.
Create a drawing that reflects your understanding of Burlington.
Emphasis: Composition, Line, Value and Texture

Friday April 29th: Resource Journal: Forces of Nature
Research the various images/ideas/myths associated with Wind.
Create a drawing of the personification of Wind or
create a composition of a landscape/urbanscape after a wind storm.

Tuesday May 3rd 2011:
Rain Delay: Resource Journal: Create a landscape drawing based upon the style of Emily Carr (First Book of Canadian Art p.40)
Medium: Oil Pastel
Emphasis: Colour, Line, Shape and Composition
Or Using the facial proportion diagram create a Haida Style Mask with a modern theme. See examples in the corner of the room.

Canadian Art Sketching Period                                             May 9th 2011

 

 

Instructions:  Create one to three drawings based upon the possible compositions

in the Ravine and amphitheatre area.

 

 

Emphasis: Line, Shape, Value, Texture and Composition.

 

 

Possible Suggestions:

 

Sketch One: Detail of bark, leaf or bud against a bark background

 

Sketch Two: Detail of a stream bed/rocks/ debris etc.

 

Sketch Three: Landscape containing at least three to four trees in the foreground with

                       a clear horizon line and use of perspective.

 

 

For tomorrow’s class we will start by reviewing the drawings we completed.
