Week of Jan 9th

Just an update on the busy week we've had back.  Friday the students have their parables (stories with pictures) due.  They've also been working on News Reports, writing stories, filming and editing on windows movie maker in the lab.  This week we've started our second science unit (space).  Tomorrow we have a math quiz on rectangular prism area and volume and area of a triangle.  In Phys Ed, we've begun our basketball unit, working on dribbling, shooting and pivoting.
On a personal note, I'd like to thank those of you who sent your holiday wishes and presents to me before the break.  I really appreciate the kind words and thoughts.  This really has been one of my most enjoyable teaching years so far.

January 14th

Finish your triangular prisms for tomorrow.

Week of January 13th

This week the students are working on Surface Area of a Triangular Prism in Math, the Earth's relation to the Sun in Science and Science Reading Responses in Language (Space Junk).  We've been working on creating a news report on Canadian news stories but the technology has not been cooperating for many of the groups.  I've extended the presentation date until this Friday so hopefully they will be up and running.  Tomorrow we have a Social Studies Test on Mapping Skills.  The test review is from a website called www.brainpop.com

The user name and password are: bcps and brainpop
Follow this path to get to the topics:
Social Studies
Geography
mapping Skills/Time Zones/ Longitude and Latitude and Continents

It's an excellent site and has many short cartoon videos on almost anything you can think of. Furthermore, I've returned their last writing assignment (DARE report) with feedback of how to improve their writing.  The newest assignment was due on Friday (Parable)  and most handed theirs in by Monday.  Lastly, Montpelier is starting a penny drive.  Our school goal is 4 large water jugs of pennies which will provide clean water for 20 people for a lifetime.  So bring in those pennies.

January 21st

Triangular Prism Surface Area Test tomorrow
Science Term Assignment Research
Learn Prezi at home

Week of January 21st

Dear Parents,

Here's a mid year request for you...pencils and kleenex.  We are well on our way of using up my pencil budget for the year so if you could send your young ones with a package from the dollar store that would be helpful.
Homework: the students can work on their Science Term Prezi's at home and review the formula for area of a parallelogram.
I've also marked and returned a reading response assignment on, "How a star is born".
Thanks as always,

Week of January 28th

Thank you very much to those of you who've sent in pencils and kleenex.  If every student brought one box we'd have enough for the rest of the year.
This week we've started algebra.  The students have a handout for homework tonight.  We also have their Prezi presentations on a space word of their choice due Thursday.  We've also started literature circles, so each student has a section to read in their novel and a job to do each week.  Our first jobs are due on the week of February 4th.  There is a PD day on Friday this week.

January 29th
Math handout, algebra just the adding side.  TThose that didn't finish yesterday's homework due to absence on Monday are to have it finished by tomorrow as well.

January 30th
prezi presentations tomorrow
both sides of algebra math hand out

Week of February 4th
Wow February already!

I'm happy to see more pencils arriving daily from your young ones.  It is appreciated because they lose them rapidly.  A couple reminders, dance a thon pledges are due in on February 12th which is the day of the dance a thon.  The 13,14,15 are the three days the kids are going to Tim Horton's camp.

Work that is due:

Language
Literature circle assignments are due at the time of their discussions.  The students have written in their agendas when their next meeting is.
We are also working on writing persuasive paragraphs.  Their "pink sheet" is due tomorrow.

Science/Information technology
The students are currently presenting their Space Term "Prezi" presentations.  They have been very impressive.  I would recommend asking your son/daughter to show you the work they've done.

Math
We are currently working on algebra.  Another handout is for homework tonight.

February 7th
Literature Circles are always something the students can work on.  The first round of discussions are almost finished with two groups to go.
Tomorrow there is a math tomorrow on algebra.  The students have a review handout they can work on tonight.

Week of February 11th

he cabin groups have been set for the TIm Horton's camp, I'm sure you'll hear about them tonight.  As far as homework for this shortened week, I would suggest that the students not forget about their Literature circle assignments .  The next meeting will be on Tuesday February 19th after tomorrow.  Here are the books and the days they are scheduled to present:
Lone Wolf-Mondays
Call of the Wild - Tuesdays
The Outsiders- Wednesdays
My Side of the Mountain -Thursdays
Runt- Fridays

Every group has read the first section of their book and taken part in their literature circle discussion and submitted their roles.  We are now starting a math unit on Decimals, percents and Fractions.  In Science, we'll conclude our unit on Space when we get the chance.  In phys ed, we have been feverishly playing  ball hockey for the past few weeks.  I am sure the students will have a terrific time at camp and look forward to seeing them back here on the 19th of February.  Remember, the bus leaves Wednesday at approximately 10am so arrival for regular school time is fine.

Week of February 19th

This week we welcome a new student, Sarah B. to 6-2.  The students did a great job of being friendly and inclusive to our newest member of Montclair.  Unfortunatly we are also losing a student this week, Nisal is moving away.  We will definetely miss him in 6-2.  This week the students are continueing to work on their literature circle roles and drama presentations for every Friday. Tomorrow "Call of the Wild" and "Outsiders" will present their roles in the discussions.  We are also working on persuasive paragraphs.  Many have chosen the topic of "Why everyone should go to Tim Horton's camp".  In math we are starting a new numeracy unit that includes Fractions and Percents (pages 286-336 of the textbook).  In the computer lab, the students will be learning about the "Halton Cloud" which is Halton's version of google docs.

Week of February 25th

I am very sad to announce that Caina is moving away and will not be apart of 6-2 anymore.  She was a pleasure to have in our class and will be missed by many of her peers and teachers.  This week the students are continuing to work on Fractions.  Homework tonight is page 290 #1,2.  Literature circle discussions continue everyday so they should have their roles ready for their discussions.  We are also continuing to work on our persuasive paragraphs.  We will be using our lab time to edit each others work through the Halton Cloud.  Report Cards go home today!

February 26th

Drama presentations are on Friday.  Scripts need to be written and practiced.

February 28th

I've sent home a hearing and vision test form with your children today.  Please look it over and decide if you want your child to be tested.  There is a math quiz tomorrow on equivalent, mixed and improper fractions.  They have a handout that is review for the test.  Drama skits are tomorrow as well.  Bring in props, costumes and memorize lines to maximize marks.  The scripts are saved on their Halton Cloud which is accessible from home.  Remember to down load google chrome before using.

Week of March 4th

We are continuing with our work with Fractions this week.  We are also continuing with our literature circle roles.  The students have two jobs left, the final job being submitted the week following the break.  Drama presentations are still due every Friday including this week.  We've started a new unit in Science (Electricity).  We have our first quiz on Wednesday. I've handed back our first fractions test. I think that's everything for now!

March 6th
page 303 #2
We are currently learning about adding fractions.  Find a common denominator and add the numerators!  Then put the fraction in simplest terms.
We are redoing the Science Test tomorrow because of glitches in the technology.  The students know what questions are on the test so they have a chance to get a really great mark!

March 7th

Tomorrow drama presentations.  Bring in props and memorize lines.
Crazy hat day.  Bring in a toonie.

Week of March 18th
I hope everyone enjoyed having their children home for the break, I know I enjoyed the extra time with my two little ones.  I would also like to welcome our new student Michelle L. to 6-2.  This week we're getting back in the swing  by continuing with our work on Fractions (adding and subtracting pg. 302-306 of the textbook).  In language, we are finishing up our literature circle discussions.  All of the assignments are due at the end of this week.  In science, we are continuing our work on Electricity.  Milk orders are due this Wednesday.  Thank you and have a great week.

Homework tonight: Math page 302 #3

Language assignment Week 5 day 2 and 3

Week of March 25th

This week the students have been practicing speeches with partners.  We'll be developing what a good speech looks like together as a class.  We've already had a few present their practice speech.  I've filmed it and emailed it to them for them to critique their technique.  I'm sure they'd be happy to share with you.  In math, we're continuing to work on fractions.  We are continuing to work on paragraph writing in language and adding "voice" to their writing.  The homework for tonight is to practice their speech if they haven't presented.  The "big speech" will happen in April.  We'll be starting those next week!  Tomorrow we have a special presentation in the gym from the Khalaungi dancers.

Week of April 2nd

Wow April already!  I know I've said this before but the year is really flying by for me.  I am really enjoying my year with your sons and daughters.  With only 3 months remaining, their is still much to be covered before we send them off to be intermediates.  Right now in language we are focusing on writing speeches.  I'm including a package in this email highlighting some important points and some suggestions that can help make a strong speech.  Mrs. Ferris and I are encouraging the students to make their speech "persuasive".  For example, instead of writing a speech on just "hockey", argue, "Why every child should play hockey" or "Why hockey is the best sport in the world".  Then support your opinion statement with reasons and evidence.

Today in Math I handed back their second fractions test.  Please check their work over and email me any questions if you have them.  The test was out of 31 so anyone with lower than 22, (70%) can come in before school and try to raise their mark to 70%.  I've noticed that putting fractions in simplest form and converting from mixed to improper is still an area of concern for some students so they are welcome to join me during extra help before school to catch up.

Homework tonight is the side one of the handout on simplest form.  Anyone who completes the second side will get 10 Steeds Bucks (very exciting!).

April 3rd

Math homework page 322 #1-5 (Ratios)

Week of April 8th

The students are well underway with their speeches.  Everyone has chosen a topic and is feverishly researching and writing their rough copies.  I have enclosed information on the speeches on my website main page under the heading "Grade 6 Speech Information".  Some students have finished their rough drafts and are practicing memorizing and presenting.  Some dates for the students to keep in mind:

Inclass speeches are the week of April 22nd.
The date of the school competition is May 3rd.

In other news, we have been doing read alouds in class.  We read different short stories and discuss authors message and how the author used "voice" in their writing.  Today we're doing a readers theatre to practice our expression in our reading.

In math we are continuing to work on Ratios and Rate.  We'll have a quiz tomorrow on Ratios (Wednesday).
In Phys Ed, we're doing a short unit on dance.  The students are creating a short dance routine to present to their peers

April 11th

Tomorrow page 329 of math textbook 1-9 (Rate)
Car Performances tomorrow last period
Work on those speeches.

April 12

Today the students were given back their literature circle duotangs with their final marks and next steps attached.  Please take a moment to look through them.  If you have any questions please let me know.
Also, we haved planned a field trip to Crawford lake.  If you wish for your child to participate please return the form no later than April 25.  Have a great weekend.

Week of April 15th

Finally some nice spring weather!  There has been a change to the cost of our field trip!  Thanks to Mrs. Ferris, we have applied and received a $500 bursary to go towards an outdoor field trip (Crawford Lake).  So the cost has dropped from $15 to $6 per student.  Thank you for those that returned their form so promptly however I'll have to ask you to write another cheque.  Sorry for the incontinence.   Hopefully you had a chance to look at their literature circle feedback.  If there is time this year, I'm hoping to do one more novel study before the end of June.  My goal is for the students to take their feedback and use it to improve on their literature circles.  They will definitely be doing them again within the next two years here at Montclair.  In language this week, the students are working on stories from two perspectives.  They are working to include "voice" in their writing.  I'll attach the checklist for the assignment.  Also, speeches will take place next week starting on Tuesday (April 23rd).  I will take volunteers first and then draw names for the rest of the spots.  Students should have their speeches finished by April 22nd.  Again, speech rubric and helpful hints can be found on my webpage. In Math we are working on "rates".  The next unit is going to be metric conversion. In Phys Ed, the students are finishing up their dance performances.  They have been very interesting so far.  Some dates to keep in mind: `April 23rd speeches start  April 18th Bag to school May1st Crawford Lake May 3rd Speech competition for grades 4,5,6 in gym Tomorrow there is a music presentation in the gym at 9:15 (Jazz)

April 18th
Work on speeches and perspective stories.
Stories are due on Monday typed and shared with me through the halton cloud.

April 19th
Speeches are due for next week.  The students are going to start presenting on Tuesday.  I'm taking volunteers first and then I'm drawing names for the rest.

Week of April 22nd

Sorry for the late weekly update, I was off yesterday as my two little ones were getting ear tubes due to repeated ear infections.  Thankfully, all is well in the Steeds' house now.
This week we've started with metric conversion in math.  It is a unit that our school has had difficulty in.  I've seen the results of the EQAO scores and it is something that is lacking so I'm going to try to pay extra attention to it.
We are presenting our speeches this week as well.  I'm going to take volunteers today and then assign a time for the rest to go.  Since I haven't checked in with the students this week, I'll only let those who are ready present today.  Tomorrow all will be expected to be ready.
We've also been writing stories from two perspectives.  They are saved on the Halton Cloud so your son/daughter can pull it up and show you at home.
In preparing for our trip to Crawford Lake next week, the students are working on their first nations tasks.  The money and trip form for the field trip is due this Thursday so please get your $6 in so I can count it up.

Week of April 29th

Wow!  It's hard to believe it's almost May!  With the end of the school year just around the corner Mrs. Ferris and I are finding a few "Intermediate" type behaviours starting to pop up.  Could you please have a talk with your young one's about appropriate use of smart phones.  Like much of Halton, Montclair is working on finding of how to incorporate student owned technology in the classroom.  However, there is no place for tenting, gaming or phone calls during class time.  If your permit your son or daughter to bring a smart phone to school ensure that they know it should stay out of sight during class time like secured in their locker.  It is also preferred if cell phones, iphones and ipads are not shared or lent to their friends and should never be out of sight  unless locked away.
This week we are working hard to prepare for the Crawford Lake trip.  Thank you so much for the overwhelming parent support.  I've never experienced that many volunteers for a class trip (especially in intermediate).  Remember that the bus leaves at 9am on Wednesday and we will return by the end of the school day.
Congratulations to those students who made it into the "speak off" tomorrow second period.  The class voted and 6 speakers will attempted to be of the 2 that represent our class in Friday's speech competition.
In math this week, we are continuing our work on Metric Conversion.  Please take the time to ensure homework is complete.  There are many smart phone apps that help with conversion so you can help check your child's homework.  Metric conversion is a challenging unit and is usually represented on the EQAO test that the students will take at the end of May.  Homework for tonight is page 240 of the textbook #1-4.

April 30th

Tomorrow the bus is leaving at 9am.  It is suppose to be nice (20 degrees) but please pack at least a light jacket and boots or hiking shoes.  From students and teachers that have been they say it can be quit muddy if it has rained.  Also a lunch, snacks and a water bottle would be a good idea.  I also advised the students to leave their electronic devices at home or in their lockers.  I'm not sure if their is a secure place for them to be stored once we get to Crawford Lake.
I've also sent home a permission form for 3 swimming lesson dates.  The first day is next Tuesday May 7th in the morning.  There is no cost.  There are lessons for all levels of swimmers.  Please return those permission forms by Friday since we are walking over to the White Oaks Pool next week.

May 2nd

Swim forms are due tomorrow.
Math Handout 9 #3abc
Yesterda'y Crawford Lake trip was a success.  The 6's were great, they made Montclair proud.  Thanks to Mrs. Van Kamp and Mrs. Jackson for coming along and tolerating  the "Wheels on the Bus".
Also, congratulations to Ian and Katya who were chosen by the rest of the class to represent 6-2 in the speech competition tomorrow morning.  Good luck to them!

Week of May 6th

First of all I'd like to congradulate Ian and Katya for representing our class so well at Friday's speech cometition.  Both did a great job but Ian ended up winning the whole competition.  Way to go Ian!  His speech on Chris Hadfield impressed the judges enough to have him be Montclair's speech representive.

This week we are continuing with Metric Conversions.  A review was handed out on Friday, page 243 #11,12.  There will be a quiz on "weight" tomorrow.  The following days this week we will focus on volume.  In language, we are finishing up some readers theatre and will be focusing on EQAO preparation (May 30th, 31st, June 1st)

In Phys Ed, we are training for Montclair's track and Field Day (May 17th).  The students are expected to choose 3 events from 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, triple jump, long jump and shot put.

Tomorrow is our first of 3 free swimming lessons at the White Oaks Pool.  The dates are May 7th, 9th and 13th.

May 8th

Swimming tomorrow.  We need to be IN  the pool BY 9am (the permission form was a mistake).  So I'll be meeting the students in the foyer at 8:45.
Math page 234 #2,3,4

May10th

Yesterday a fund raiser folder was sent home with the youngest and only child in your household.  It is an initiative to create awareness in the students by having them raise money for a very worthy cause, cancer. Anything you can do to support the cause will be greatly appreciated.

On another note, good luck to Avery Taylor today as she goes off to her cheerleading competition!

Week of May 13th

A lot is happening these days in 6-2.  Our Locks of Love fundraiser is underway.  Please contribute what you can.
In math this week, we are finishing up measurement and moving into geometry (translations).  On Wednesday, we're having a test in Social Studies on First Nations.  The review sheet has been put on the Halton Cloud and is accessible from any computer with Internet access.  In Language, we're continuing our EQAO preparation.
Practice questions can be found at:
Make sure to open the Junior Division tests.
We're also designing a DVD cover.  If you have any spare DVD's that can be used for part of the assignment, please send them in.
On Wednesday we're going to do a small project with the grade 2's using Bit Strips.  They're going to create a health related comic strip starring themselves as the characters.
Today in Phys Ed we continued practicing for our track and field meet on Friday.  Many of the kids ran 100 and 200 metres and practiced shot put, triple jump and long jump.  The Montclair track meet will take place on Friday periods 3-6 at the WOSS track.  Grades 6-8 will walk over after first nutrition break.  All students are expected to compete in at least 3 events.  Top 2 competitors advance to the Halton Track and Field Meet on May 27th.

Week of May21st

I'm sure if you're feeling the same way I am the long weekend has you thinking of summer!  However, as I talked to the kids about this morning there is still plenty of school left in the year.  This week we have started a data management cram session in order to be prepared for EQAO next week.  In the next few days we are going to cover:
-Interpreting Data pg 170-171 of textbook
-Mean, median and mode (pg 174-175 of textbook)
-Stem and Leaf Plots (Handout, not in the textbook)
-Constructing Graphs (pg 178-179)
-probability and percent (pg 414-415
I know it seems like a lot but much of it is review from grades 4 and 5.  Any additional practice done at home will be greatly appreciated and help for the test next week. In social studies we are researching early explorers.  As soon as the students have found research on their early explorer, they are going to create a project on the Ipad to present their work.  Research should be done by tomorrow. Tomorrow I'm hoping that we can finish up our DVD covers.  I know that many students are taking the project to another level by creating actual movies to go with their cover.  Great job to those students! In other news, congratulations to the winners at Friday's track and field competition.  Please return permission forms for the track meet on May 27th as soon as possible.  A special shout out to Mrs. Allin for organizing the whole track and field meet, as well as winning runners and permission forms.  It was a lot of extra work for her but was a fun day for everyone. I should also note that I've fallen a bit behind in my marking and there is a few tests that should be going home by the end of the week and later next week.  Expect to see results from the rate test and the social studies test fairly soon.
