Here is a glance at our upcoming presentations:

September:      All About Me Paper Bag

October:        Bat Research

January:        Penguin Research

February:

April:          Movie Review

May:            Poetry Reading

All About Me Paper Bag

* Your child will be bringing home a paper bag to decorate.  They can draw or cut out pictures of things that help to describe themselves and their hobbies.  Inside, they will place 3 objects that describe them or activities they enjoy.  If the items are valuable, we suggest sending a hand-drawn picture or photograph.  The presentation should be brief- about 2-3 minutes- to help the children become more comfortable speaking before of a group.  I will be looking for clear and audible speaking and eye contact with the group.

My Favourite Book

* Your child will have the "My Favourite Book" template in which (s)he can write dot-jots about the story elements (title, author, setting, characters, problem and resolution, favourite part).  We are looking for students to elaborate on these dot-jot points in their presentation to improve fluency while presenting.  On the back, students will draw a picture of their favourite part.  If you wish, your child is welcome to bring in their favourite book however, this is not essential.  The presentation should be about 2-3 minutes.

Here are some starting sentence ideas:
The title of my favourite book is ________________________
The author _______________ wrote the book and worked with ____________________ who was the illustrator.
The story took place ______________________
The main problem of the story________________________
The problem was resolved when_______________________
My favourite part is________________
I would recommend this book to _______________ because____________________

Penguin Research
*Your child will be provided with an outline that can be used to help organize the penguin presentation.  Students will be exploring www.kidzone.ws in class to begin their penguin research.  There are further penguin websites included on the informational page sent
home and below.  Student presentations should be 2-3 minutes in length.  Your child will be presenting facts that are new/interesting
to them.  Also, the presentation schedule is posted below.

Have fun!

Dear Grade Two Parents,

We are currently studying the works of William Steig.  He was the author of many wonderful adventure stories that often involved humour, both in text and illustrations.  The characters usually possess such qualities as perseverance and hope.  The study of his books will provide students great opportunities for relating their opinion.
As an extension to our study of Brave Irene, we are asking students to interview a parent (or grandparent) to get the details of a situation that was very challenging.  The intent is that your child could accomplish your goal.  The story might be about learning to ride a bike, how you had to walk all the way to school, or a more recent accomplishment.  The most important aspect of this homework assignment is that your child is prepared to comfortably tell your story of success.  Please see the attached schedule for your child’s presentation date.
The following outline may help guide your discussion and give your child a place to record his/her plan for the presentation.  Remember, an effective presentation is one that is spoken in a natural voice, not read from a paper.  Please help your child practice retelling his/her story until it can be done with enthusiasm and an easy flow.

Thank you for your support,

C. Vaughan

Dear Parents,

As part of our Poetry Unit, your child has been asked to present a poem of his or her choosing to the class in a unique way.

Your child will need a shoe box (or a plastic container) to complete this activity.  He or she will paste the chosen poem on the inner lid of the box.  Inside the box, your child can place 2 or 3 items related to the poem.  If the items are too large to fit into the box, pictures of the items (either cut and paste or hand drawn) can be used instead.  The outside of the box should be decorated in keeping with the theme of the poem.

The poem your child chooses should be memorized.  Appropriate poems have been included for your child to consider.  Each child may choose from the poems provided, or he or she is free to select one independently.

Your child can choose to incorporate the box and related items into the presentation of the poem, or discuss them afterwards.  The presentation can include drama (e.g., gestures, actions, voices, etc.) to emphasize the meaning of the poem.  Each presentation will be evaluated using the enclosed rubric.

A schedule of presentation dates have been included with this letter.  Please notify your child’s teacher as soon as possible if the presentation date for your child needs to be adjusted.

Have fun!

Mrs Vaughan
