Writing is an important part of our school day.  Students practice
their skills in many different ways.  We learn to record information
using graphic organizers, (Venn Diagrams, story maps and webs etc.)
write letters, story maps, retells, relates, reflects, and creative writing.
To help bring writing to life and engage our early writers, we assume
different writing roles throughout the year.  We write as journalists,
editors, publicists, scientists, "how to" authors, cartoonists and more!
It's important for children to enjoy writing and see the many professions
that utilize writing as a means of employment.
Writing will be assessed using the following criteria:

Use of conventions
Does the child use grammar, spelling patterns,
punctuation, capitalization effectively?
Word Choice
Does the child use language effectively?
Do they regularly use adjectives and adverbs
to help clarify their writing and "paint a picture"
for their audience?
Communication
Does the child clearly communicate
his/her thoughts?
Sentence Structure
What is the level of complexity of the writing?
Does the child write simple sentences or regularly
use linking words to write complex, detailed sentences?
Organization
Does the child write fluently?
Does the writing make sense and follow a logical sequence?
*Voice
Does the child write with feeling?
Does he/she share their feelings about the topic (where applicable)?
Do they connect with the reader?

If your child is a reluctant writer, you might try some of these ideas to encourage some writing at home:

•write a letter to a relative or sibling
        •help write a grocery list
        •create a recipe for a special treat
•write an adventure with your child as the main character
        •make a comic strip
        •create a story together
•write using pens, markers, gel pens or other fun writing materials
