Learning Skills

There are six key Learning Skills in the classroom:

  • Responsibility
  • Collaboration
  • Organization
  • Initiative
  • Independent Work
  • Self-Regulation

RESPONSIBILITY:
  • A student who is responsible takes care of his/her belongings and manages their behaviour effectively.
Students effectively use their agenda by independently removing it from their backpack and sharing notes as needed (without reminders). They are responsible for their belongings and store them neatly in the classroom (e.g. coats and backpacks are hung and shoes are lined up neatly).  Students follow the Tribes Agreements of Mutual Respect, Attentive Listening, No Put-Downs and Exercising their Right to Participate/Pass.
ORGANIZATION:
  • A well-organized student demonstrates an organization of personal and learning materials as well as organizing his/her thoughts to effectively complete his/her work.
Students keep their desk well-organized so they are able to locate their work and materials independently.  They know how and where to locate necessary materials for their learning and acquire them independently.  Students listen carefully to task instructions and follow the class-constructed model so they are able to complete their work.
INDEPENDENT WORK:
  • A student who has strong Independent Work habits consistently demonstrates a sustained effort and commitment to his/her learning.
Students approach new learning opportunities positively and are eager to start their tasks immediately.  They remain on task without distracting others around them and encourage others to stay focused.  They are aware of timelines and complete the task within the given time frame.  Students take pride in their work and the finished product.
COLLABORATION:
  • Collaboration is working positively together with other students in an effort to teach and learn from one another.
Students who collaborate well complete their share of the work when working with others.  They willingly accept different roles when participating in a group.  Students learn to respect others' ideas and opinions and will learn about compromise and conflict-resolution.
INITIATIVE:
  • Initiative is demonstrated when a student is committed to challenging themselves and submitting his/her very best work.
Students demonstrate a positive attitude toward learning and are willing to try new things with an open mind.  They are willing to share their ideas and the connections them make to their learning with others.  Students demonstrate a curiousity about their learning and ask questions of themselves to deepen their understanding.
SELF REGULATION:
  • A student who has strong Self-Regulation skills is determined to reach his/her goals and they challenge themselves along the way.
Students acknowledge that they always have a goal to meet and monitor their progress toward achieving them.  They recognize that there are positive classroom strategies that will support them in their learning and that there is always room for growth and/or improvement.  They often challenge themselves to puzzle out solutions but will ask questions to clarify instructions when they are confused.
